On the last Saturday of the month, the rain clouds parted and the sun shone down on IXLers as we gathered to assist the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy in preserving Mori Point in Pacifica.
Mori Point is a park that’s home to the threatened California red-legged frog and the endangered San Francisco garter snake. Both animals find protection in Mori Point’s native coastal prairie vegetation and rely on the efforts of volunteers to ensure their survival and ongoing health.
It was extremely important that we work together to control the spread of weeds. With this year’s heavy rainfall, the weeds have grown faster and stronger, potentially threatening the coyote brush, blackberry plants, and bee plants planted by other volunteers. Many animals rely on the brush: rabbits and coyotes depend on it for shelter; birds and butterflies, for nectar; and insects, for nutrients. The survival of the coyote brush is essential for Mori Point’s habitat, and together we cleared out over thirty 70-gallon bags of weeds.

We were muddy, but proud to see the newly planted brush, blackberry, and bee plants finally getting some much deserved sun, now that the weeds have been cleared!
