The Basics

Name and title:

Meghan Thompson, District Partnership Specialist

Has been at IXL for:

2 years

Hometown and current city:

Roanoke, VA, currently living on the road in my RV!

Life at IXL

Why did you join IXL?

I was previously a teacher and principal, and wanted to try something outside of a school building. I was looking at different products that I knew and liked, and I thought IXL might be a good fit! I liked IXL because I was able to personally see the results it had in the classroom and it had a robust professional development team that I could see myself working with.

What do you do at IXL? Give us a taste of what a typical workday is like for you.

Every day is a little different, but mainly I am supporting districts with their IXL implementation. Each day I am communicating with district leaders via email or video conference, or leading professional development training for school leaders and teachers.

What are the 2-3 skills you use most in your job?

  1. Data analysis: In order to have an authentic conversation with a district about where they are and how they can improve, you must be able to pull up their data and draw correlations about what’s happening. And you need to be able to point to key levers that will increase student achievement data.
  2. Relationship building: This job is all about trust, so if teachers and admins can’t trust you, they won’t purchase and renew. They want to see a level of credibility and understanding in you.
  3. Facilitation: Teachers will believe in products if they have a well-facilitated professional development. You need to provide them with clear, concise, and engaging material to gain their trust.

Who do you look up to most at IXL and why?

District Partner Specialist Team Lead, Aura Plair! Her level of finesse with customers is unparalleled; she can walk into any conversation and make them a fan of IXL. She has a way of helping you shift perspective and see the other person’s point of view. She is truly masterful at what she does.

If you had to describe the ethos of IXL in one sentence, what would it be?

At our core, we believe that personalizing instruction and emphasizing growth are the keys to developing student knowledge and confidence that will last beyond the classroom.

Life beyond IXL

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to camp, explore national parks, hike, and see different places that you can’t see without getting out of your car.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

I love to binge watch shows on Netflix like Schitt’s Creek and Alone.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

An astronaut!

How would your friends describe you?

Energetic, excitable (or slightly spastic), kind, and dependable!
