IXL’s Canada curriculum is expanding its horizons, with the addition of K-8 science!
IXL Science helps students develop their reasoning and critical thinking skills while learning about the world around them. Our in-depth and interactive science curriculum ensures students are not just learning facts, but also applying them to real-world situations.
IXL now provides a K-8 comprehensive curriculum across three subjects: math, English language arts, and science. With IXL’s personalized learning platform, educators and parents have everything they need to meet each student’s needs while supporting interdisciplinary learning.
Let’s take a closer look at IXL’s new science curriculum!
Comprehensive and adaptive content
IXL’s curriculum covers a wide array of topics—from physical science, Earth and space science, and life science to scientific inquiry and engineering design—to cater to the diverse interests of all students. IXL’s science content uses a variety of visuals and interactive question types to engage learners and help them understand complex concepts.
Students always have access to all K-8 science skills, regardless of their grade level, making it easy to review foundational concepts or explore new topics at any time. Each skill is deeply adaptive to each learner, providing them with the scaffolding and differentiation needed to ensure true mastery.
Plus, IXL Science is perfectly aligned with all provincial curricula. Each skill is carefully crafted to meet the unique learning objectives set by each province.
Science skill plans
IXL Science also provides teachers with ready-made plans that match IXL skills to the curricula for Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, and British Columbia.

Our skill plans provide teachers with the exact skills students should work on to meet learning objectives and prepare for standardized assessments. Teachers can easily assign skills and rest assured that students are mastering the appropriate content.
Skill progression
IXL Science skills follow a unique scoring system specifically designed to support the immersive and rich nature of the science curriculum.
With IXL Science, students progress through skills in stages. Each science concept is broken down into different steps to help them learn and check for understanding. Once learners complete multiple stages, they will achieve mastery of the skill!
As such, science skills use one of the following score types to ensure learners are reaching mastery:
- Percents: Students need to answer a certain amount of questions correctly to move to the next stage.
- Streaks: Students must answer a certain number of questions correctly in a row.
- Tokens: Students receive a token for each question they answer correctly, and move on once they’ve earned all tokens for that stage.
While students won’t see a SmartScore during practice, SmartScores are available in IXL Analytics.
Sample skills
Take a look at some sample science skills:
How do animals use their body parts?: In this skill, students identify a variety of animals and their body parts. Learners see how animals use their body parts for survival.

Identify phases of the moon: In this skill, students explore the different phases of the moon and learn how to use scientific models to solve questions.
