At IXL, we’ve done extensive research into the best ways for learners to use our platform to get consistent positive results. These research-backed best practices can help schools optimize IXL usage.
Now in addition to district administrators, school administrators can also access two new reports to help them easily track how well their students are meeting those recommended usage goals and maximizing their learning gains. Let’s take a look at the Skill Usage and Skill Proficiency reports.
Skill Usage report
Studies show that answering just 15 questions per subject on IXL each week improves students’ state test performance. The Skill Usage report helps you track whether your students are meeting that goal, and highlights other helpful practice stats.
You can use the Skill Usage report to see how your students are using IXL, including the number of questions they’ve answered (both on average per week and in total) and the time they’ve spent practicing. Filter this data by subject, date range, and grade to get the exact information you’re looking for on student practice.

Skill Proficiency report
Research shows that achieving proficiency and mastery on IXL skills leads to significant learning gains. The Skill Proficiency report helps you understand whether your school is using IXL for this kind of purposeful practice.
The top of the report shows the total number of skills practiced, number of skills proficient, and number of skills mastered by your school.
Below that are the Skill Proficiency report’s two tabs:
- On the left, the skill gains tab shows a breakdown of skills practiced, proficient, and mastered per student.
- On the right, the skills proficient tab shows the average number of skills students have reached proficiency in per week.
Like the Skill Usage report, you can filter this data by subject, data range, and grade to find the insights you need.
